MUSIC // GRANDMASTERMACK

After spending all last night listening to a variety of mixes using Mixcloud, i took a great likening to some mellow down tempo dub. So for your ears I have a little pre-christmas gift.

Hope you Enjoy as much as I do!

LIGHTING // 3D BUILDING PROJECTION

The video below has not been edited in any way. These '3D building projections' are mapped out on a computer, being adapted for individual buildings and as I'm sure you'll agree, they are very impressive.

MUSIC // ALBUM OF THE YEAR?

With the countdown to 2011 on, New Year plans getting warped and scrapped every 2 days I thought I'd try and choose an album of the year to celebrate the beginning of the end for 2010. It only came to me tonight but it has to be Tame Impala's debut album Innerspeaker. This psychedelic clash of sounds that can be attributed to the beatles, hendrix and the stone roses, culminates in a crescendo of bliss. A personal favourite is the fantastically confrontational riff in "the bold arrow of time" (2m09) here. Truly spectacular stuff from the Aussie foursome.

MUSIC // GRANDMASTERMACK

Another week, another mix.

Taken it back to some old school hip-hop, let the beers flow whilst you bob your head in your finest festive Christmas knitwear.

ARCHITECTURE // DOG POO???

Certain words are often attached to English seaside towns such as traditional, quaint and charming. Upon my visit to one of these towns recently I visited a building which not only goes against the grain, it jumps out of the water and slaps the stereotypes square in the jaw.

Littlehamptons' East Beach Cafe is an example of things to come (hopefully!!) for struggling resorts the length of the coast. Striking to say the least, the Cafe has taken centre stage on the promenade of the small south coast town not exactly renown for its striking architecture, until now that is.

On a cold, wet early winters day I ventured down to see what all the fuss was about. Heatherwick Studios were commissioned to design a structure which could both help preserve the picturesque seafront from over-development and provide a new focal point that locals and tourists alike would be proud to call their own.

The striking ribboned steel outer shell certainly looks like nothing else in the town, yet it manages to seamlessly blend into the landscape by resembling something you might find washed up. Indeed its outer shell provides not only a striking façade to admire, it manages to withstand all that the English channel has to throw at it. On sunnier days, the glass front opens onto the beach to provide al-fresco drinking and dining on a par with anywhere on the English coast.

I for one found it hard to resist and had to sample its delights, not at least to regain my normal body temperature. When inside it all makes sense straight away, the harsh exterior transforms the inside into something warm and inviting with a view that dreamers yearn for. The food I hear is not that bad either.

And where is the link to the dogs I hear you cry? Well amongst some locals it is affectionately referred to as 'the dog poo'.

GRAFFITI // JEREMY FISH

This is the music video for 'Pigs' by the underground hip hop artist 'Aesop Rock'. The graffiti artist is an incredibly talented man named Jeremy Fish, who apparently likes animals, wings and skulls. Hopefully he can inspire you to pick up your pencil and do some drawing next time you're bored.

Some more of his wonderful work....

MUSIC // RUBBERBANDITS

Where to begin....

The Rubberbandits our beginning to straddle the comedic and music worlds like a tracksuit wearing colossus. Two men from Limerick, Ireland who are know only as Blindboy Boatclub and Mr. Chrome have manipulated and bullied their way to a level far beyond either their talent or intellect. Songs like “Bag of Glue”, “Too Many Gee” and “Up Da Ra” have made them the 12th most popular MySpace page in the whole of Ireland!

Their live show is basically a Prime Time special on Limerick gangs, sniffing glue as an aphrodisiac when encountering larger ladies, horses….the list goes on. Blindboy Boat Club and Mr. Chrome will present a perspective on life that only two roadside fruit sellers who got a start selling mix tapes through local Limerick drug dealers can provide.

A headline slot in the little big arena at Electric Picnic this year saw scenes of mass hysteria and their set was cited as one of the top picks of the Picnic. Their single Horse Outside was released on December 8, 2010 via iTunes and the video premiere was on Republic of Telly on that night, and within 72 hours, it had reached 530,000 views on YouTube and became the top rated Youtube video in Ireland. In just 5 days, the video reached over 950,000 views. Paddy Power placed the track at 8/11 and as favourite for Christmas No. 1. So well worth keeping tabs on these guys....

MUSIC // 450

May I first begin this latest post with an apology; due to spending nearly a month in Australia watching the England cricket team make mince kangaroo out of the spineless Ozzy team, a serious lack of bloggage has occurred and for that I can only apologise with a tan. To all those that read this blog religiously may I please make it up to you by notifying you to one of LeFtOoO's latest offerings, 450;

Enjoy! Just a reminder to keep checking back at www.theyellowdoghouse.com as the site goes live in the next few days.

ps. this post was made using a mac, which has been quite an experience.

CINEMATOGRAPHER // RILEY BLAKEWAY

As often happens when I'm revising I find myself trawling the internet with little or no fruition. The other day however I came across a gem.
Riley Blakeway is an up and coming cinematographer making big waves (pun intended) in the surfing world. He recently won the little weeds competition hosted by stab magazine and got a deal with Analog and Billabong. Reigniting the surfing world with his prodigious motion pictures. I'll let his footage do the rest of the talking.

This is the sort of scale Yellowdog will be operating on in the next few years so buy your shares now people!

VIDEO // LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE

Been a long hearty absence of late, obviously due to us all doing the frantic Christmas shops and spending time delicately wrapping those family gifts, all ready to place under the tree. And as our Christmas gift to you I bring you a long awaited post. As a huge number of you have sacked off work due to the 'snow' what better than to have a 40 minute video showcasing some of the best freestyle skiers, snowboarders, skaters, some awesome camera and a lot of top tunes.

If this doesn't make you feel better about missing work then I don't know what will.

Check out the Voulerz website HERE, if you got a spare couple of $$ some of the stuff is a must have.

There are some people in the world that have such ultimate skill that it makes you wonder why the rest of us are so useless. Danny MacAskill is one such gent.

MUSIC // ZEDS DEAD

“Zeds dead baby, Zeds dead” a line taken from the cult classic film, Pulp Fiction, has been utilised to great affect by this super-hot, Toronto based dubstep duo. Already making big headlines in their native Canada they have been creeping in to the UK domain slowly but surely throughout 2010, with top DJ’s Skream & Benga dropping their tunes in to some epic sets.
Zeds Dead have been gathering an ever growing fan base with their classic deep bass wobbles, intensely forceful yet soulful dubstep and electro-tunes and in members Hooks and DC we have undoubtedly unearthed a rare gift.
This talented production team has built a reputation as remixers ‘par excellence’ using a vast library of foundation material (Radiohead, The Rolling Stones, The Moody Blues, Sublime), and forming it into their unique brand of dark club classics. Their remix of Blue Foundation’s “Eyes on Fire” showing the (often forgotten) softer side of bass music just emphasises the duos versatility.
In testament to Quentin Tarantino’s film carnage Zeds Dead are going to tear the place up. Keep your ears open and a loaded Sub at the ready.

FILM // COACHELLA

Came across this video, found it breath taking and also took me back to the days of playing Sim City 3000, except at Coachella there are no natural disasters or alien invasions, just simply sun beats and beer for 3 days straight.

If you want to get even closer you can take the virtual tour. Or if you're seriously interested in going, take a look at everything you'll need to know here.

Oh and I forgot to mention it's in 155 days and in California....best get saving.

MUSIC // GOLD PANDA

Gold Panda is a left-field producer and remixer called Derwin who makes instrumental soundtracks to half-remembered, dreamy summer days. He scours charity shops for old records and VHS tapes to turn into distorted samples, and wraps them in minimal, warm beats.
He is obsessed with Japan and its culture, and once sold his entire record collection to pay for a Japanese diploma at the School of Oriental and African Studies, before moving there for a year.
It appears that he doesn't have his own website, but he is worth the extra few seconds typing into the Google search bar.
Hope you enjoy the beats as much as I do.
Stay put to see some more Panda orientated posts.

PHOTOGRAPHY // UNDER THE SEA

I like looking at things that live under the sea. Here is just a selection of awarding winning underwater photographs from 2010. I'm lucky enough to be going on a lovely diving trip to Australia's Great Barrier Reef in a week so should have a few photos of my own I can add.....albeit of much poorer quality.

FILM // DRAGONFLY LOVE

Director Thomas Hilland was asked to test drive the Nokia N8, and make a film that made the most of the smartphone’s impressive HD camera. The film features music by Kap Bambino, remote-controlled dragonflies, a stunning Norwegian landscape, and some men in colourful costume.

‘Dragonfly Love’ was shot entirely on the Nokia N8. Thomas Hilland was told to explore the freedom of shooting on a small mobile device. Editing and special effects were added off the device, but it should be noted, the remote-controlled dragonflies are all real. See them in flight, and how they shot the film in this video.

I'm sticking to watching videos of it.

MUSIC // LEFTO

In order to really understand what Lefto is all about, you´ll have to shape up your French. His name was given by his mates when they used to go out ‘writing’. Always the first to awaken the next morning, this early bird was called ´lève tôt´ which literally means ´gets up early´. So there you have the offspring of what this man stands for: being alert and always looking for those fresh vibes you discover at dawn, while the rest´s still sleepin´ on ‘em. In 1996, with his father getting him his first set of decks on a bank-loan and Akro, of Starflam-fame, teaching him the basics, young Lefto had something to prove. And he sure did. Growing up on his father´s jazz-collection and the boombap on the streets; the eagerness to know where it all came from became a passionate quest. In search of a way to support his living, he was offered a chance at the Music Mania record store in Brussels. The now legendary chain of three Music Mania stores steadily made it´s name as being the spot to discover new talent, new genres and, of course, new releases. Ten years on their payroll made Lefto’s 6th sense for dopeness sharpen even more and so it can hardly be called a surprise, that for nine years, he has been the dj and composer of ‘De Hop’ on Studio Brussel; the only HipHop-radioshow nationally broadcast.

Have a listen to my favourite radio show by Lefto and definitely check back here for weekly updates.

CLOTHING // NINJA TURTLES

We all know at first glance exactly what is being shown before our very eyes....Yes, it's the complete hoody range of those mighty Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, or TMNT as us turtle heads like like to call them.

Is this a prime necessity that needs to be in everyone's wardrobe for those elusive fancy dress events or even a family meal down at Nando's with your Gran in full Shredder attire (although I am yet to find this outfit...) or maybe even sitting around a table at Chinawhites sipping Moet whilst you lap up all the female turtle attention.

I also came across this beauty, if for some reason the above goodies do not appeal to you, then perhaps the esteemed superiority of Captain America may be right up your street. Being slightly overweight and with a beard definitely gives you the right to bare a CA hoody. One which i may seriously look at purchasing.

I sincerely hope this has redeemed the inner child of yester year. A perfect excuse to bring it back.

ART // STOLEN COATS

Ever nicked a coat from a pub when you're a bit pissed? Well Mike Ballard has stolen over 200 coats in a 10 year retaliation spree. His initial aim was to recover from the pain of having his own 55DSL jacket stolen from a crowded pub but it just spiralled way out of control.

Mike Ballard meticulously catalogued the location the jackets were stolen and also what was left inside them. In a self-imposed therapeutic session he now seeks redemption by relinquishing his collection back to the public. If visitors claim a jacket and correctly name the location it was stolen or its contents, they will be able to reclaim it.

MUSIC // SHOOK

It all began in 1986. It was the year Shook was born. As a young kid, Shook saw a light falling from the sky. It was the same night he stumbled on a pair of mysterious looking sun glasses. Shook wasn't a big fan of taking worn items he had found in the forest home, but against his principles he picked up the glasses and put them in his pocket. At that moment Shook felt a shiver running through his spine. A strange feeling came over him. He didn't know what it was, but it felt as if someone – or something – was lurking in the dark, watching him.

Shook has produced a number of remix's as well as his own stuff. Shook came to my attention which an absolutely outstanding remix of the soon to be cult classic Lizstomania by Phoenix. I think you will all agree with me here that shook has done this song an ever greater justice than the original.

The style that Shook is simply beautiful, he collaborates a range of synths, piano rifts and deep soulful electronic music to create a perfect medley of upbeat all the way to drift asleep music. Such as this

And this.

I find the latter two of the tunes so moving and go off into my own little world.

Great stuff, hopefully get to see and hear about him more and more.
