RANDOM // LONDON UNDERGROUND

Although I don't live in London or use the tube too often I still found the 'guide to alternative london tube maps' pretty interesting.

The tube system once began as a collection of independent underground railway companies that constructed lines in the 19th and early 20th centuries. These companies published route maps of their own services but did not, generally, co-operate in advertising their services collectively. The first combined map was published in 1908 by the Underground Electric Railways Company of London.

The first diagrammatic map of the Underground was designed by Harry Beck in 1931. Beck was an Underground employee who realised that because the railway ran mostly underground, the physical locations of the stations were irrelevant to the traveller wanting to know how to get to one station from another

He devised a simplified map, consisting of stations, straight line segments connecting them, and the River Thames; lines ran only vertically, horizontally, or on 45 degree diagonals. The Underground was initially sceptical of his proposal, it was an non-commissioned, spare-time project, and it was tentatively introduced to the public in a small pamphlet in 1933. It immediately became popular, and the Underground has used topological maps to illustrate the network ever since. Beck was paid just five guineas for the work and after its initial success, he continued to design the Underground map until 1960.

Hundreds of quality alternative maps have now been created such as the one below;

RANDOM // GOOGLE STREET VIEW

Now we all love google street view because we are able to check out our home town or even explore somewhere exotic we might be planning to visit but the randomness of the world throws up a few surprises that have been forever captured by Google. Here are a few of my personal favourites but you can also use this website to teleport around the globe at the click of a button.

MUSIC // CROMWELL STREET

Welcome to the wonderful world of Cromwell Street, this 4 piece hailing from Nottingham are what we in the 'blogging' business call Hot Property. These guys are sitting in prime position to take the UK by storm.

Citing themselves as belonging to the genre of ‘good’ music, The Cromwell Street Quartet; Julian Hanson, Max Starbuck, Adrian V Cook and Bilborough’s own Tom Towle have given birth to the cacophony of cool that is ‘Cromwell Street.’ Easily the slickest fucking indie band to come out of Nottingham since Dog is Dead, they’re doing some good shit, and doing with style.

FREE RUNNING // TEAM TEMPEST

“The idea for Team Tempest was born in Blacksburg, Virginia, in 2006. Soon after, Paul “Diddy” Darnell packed it, along with his bags, and went across country to the City of Angels.”

It was there that he met Rich “Dickie Boy” King and Vik “Showtime” Lopez. The three clicked better than Dorothy’s red shoes in the middle of a Kansas tornado. After all, Diddy needed teammates, and these two were a perfect fit. With the need for just one more handsome scutter, they found Gabe “JayWalker” Nunez to fill the spot. Tempest was finally born in May of 07’.

A four-man team dedicated to applying the power and force of a storm to their passion for freerunning. Tempest set off to pursue the dream of making a mark in the freerunning workd by adding style, creativity, and dedicated focus to the sport.
The team’s first gig together was performing at the Taurus World Stunt Awards. The show was great and so was finding out how well the newly formed group meshed. Since then, they have all been more than blessed on their freerunning journeys. Check out a video of their new academy which opened last Saturday....
