BEARDS // TRUSTWORTHY?

The question that everyone should be pondering this Christmas is whether or not we can trust men with beards. Never fear though because we at yellowdog have searched high and low for an aesthetically pleasing beardometer of trustworthiness chart. So a big thanks goes to the seriously talented Matt McInerney over at pixelspread who created the chart pictured below, for our safety. Apparently Santa is very trustworthy....hmm.

Click the image above to view it properly in all its glory.

MIX OF THE MONTH // LEE M KELSALL

First of all apologies to those of you that have been turning up to the blog each day to find there has been no new content for almost 2 weeks! EXPO! // Dog Grooming

Here at yellowdog, we love dogs. So what better way to prove this than to groom them, parade them about and then lift 4 metre high trophies for doing it. Although some of these dogs look absolutely ridiculous you've got to give some of the owners credit, having Eeyore or a miniature dinosaur walking around your house is pretty cool and from the confusing video I think a tiger cub won! Result...

TIME LAPSE // HO CHI MINH CITY

Rob Whitworth is at it again...albeit with a 2 year gap! His latest instalment is a cleverly worked time lapse created using over 10,000 individual photos from plenty of different angles in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). Basically, this video shows some seriously mental traffic raging both night and day which happens to be totally mesmerising. Enjoy...

Make sure you watch it full screen with your speakers on and like his Vimeo channel here.

TUNE OF THE DAY // Lee M Kelsall - On the Road (Matt Fear Remix)

WOAH!! When I'm sat at my desk working hard, rarely does a beat so deep and smooth make me minimise my 'work', find the tune, rewind it, adjust my bass levels to LARGE and start the tune again. A big thanks to Lee M Kelsall and his On the Road tune for making this day a very good one...

I was actually listening to the latest podcast by Crazy P on the seamless Louche Music music website when I heard this tune.

The full podcast is well worth a listen so check it out here; 061

VIDEO // FENTON IS A BAD BOY

Someone sent me a link to this video today and I can’t stop chuckling to myself thinking about. It features Fenton a dog who can’t help but surrender to his primal instincts. I’m just glad this wasn’t my dog.

Check out our YouTube channel for more dog related videos and other fun stuff.

FILM // BROKEN SILENCE

Introducing a UK short film exclusive from the illustrious and man of many talents, Zaid Alkayat

"White Lies" - Written and Directed by Zaid Alkayat - Is about Nathan, a young, drug-loving uni-gradaute, who thinks he can have it all: easy money, highs without the lows, and the girl of his dreams. But when he pits his wits against the city's most notorious dealer, he rapidly discovers that in business and in pleasure, there's no supply without demands, and people are rarely who they seem.

This film has generated a good rapport and following of Zaid's work, as a result it is being featured at the Young Film Festival and will also be shown at a number of international based film festivals.

Sit back, relax and get immersed in the dark culture shown throughout.

LILY // SHREDDING TRAILSIDE

The boys over at MtnRanks have recently released a video showcasing their seriously talented 4 legged friend, Lily. Not only can she run at about 60mph but she takes to the air with ease. This is definitely one of those videos that makes you smile without knowing about it. Check her facebook for more photos and updates.

Enjoy...

MUSIC // THE OTHER TRIBE

I am in a very privileged place right now to have got to know and see this band grow, and my have they done it with some finesse and style. The Other Tribe are a new breed of music which is seriously infectious and includes progressive tribal beats infused with guitar rifts, melodic piano, warm vocals and a cowbell. Anyone saying, "more"?

They put on a pretty special live show which is clearly evident from this video that was filmed at Crufix Lane, London. This is a hotly anticipated band with a great following in Bristol, Leeds and London. It is only a matter of time before these boys are snapped up and wowing crowds worldwide so get these guys into all your diaries as a must see!

Show them some love over at their facebook, The Other Tribe. and also on their tumblr account, Everyone Loves a tumblr.

One Love.

CLOTHING // PENFIELD

Penfield was first established in Hudson, Massachusetts and was the brainchild of founder Harvey Gross back in 1975. Over 36 years Penfield have managed to define themselves as one of the leading jacket and outdoor wear companies of the world. Originally designed to withstand the New England weather of high storms, rain or anything else for that matter, it is ever so prevalent as to the reason why I brought one myself, you just cannot trust the British climate. So owning a Penfield will sure up all potential eventualities.

I opted for the Lakeville Cobalt, the jacket has been optimised for maximum comfort with the sole purpose of keeping you comfortable throughout the changeable conditions on the horizon. The colour choice allows me to sample back to the 70s with its bright cobalt blue and leather shoulder yokes.

I love it. If you love it it as well you can buy it on Penfield's website.

WEBSITE // MOCOLOCO

Good evening all. Having a (limited) background in Product Design I can often be found clicking about the internet and ultimately entering a vortex of websites all claiming to sell the worlds most innovative products or maybe even an exclusive glimpse at the latest ergonomically designed kettle....you catch my drift.

Well finally I believe I've found a site that I can return to time and time again knowing that the enormous scope of areas of design covered are of the highest quality with some that are actually affordable! Mocoloco, I salute you for your efforts by checking you out a few times a week.

Check these out for starters...

MESMERISING PROCASTINATION // ToneMatrix

Procrastination can be hard work especially when the reason you’re procrastinating is because you simply can’t be bothered to do the thing you need to do. This tends to lead to unproductive procrastination which usually involves aimlessly clicking around the web searching for that little something to help pass the time.

Have no fear I have found the perfect tool to turn procrastination into MESMERISING PROCRASTINATION. The ToneMatrix tool created by the Laboratory of André Michelle is so amazing I can’t leave it alone.

The big question is how can something that looks so simple be so entertaining. To find out head on over to the AM Laboratory click away and find out.

VIDEO // FLIGHT OF THE FRENCHIES

This heart in mouth vertigo inducing video caught my attention earlier today. A short trailer for the beautifully filmed documentary 'I Believe I can fly' filmed by SebMontaza features the Skyliners, who say on their facebook page that they are a group of friends pushing their limits in highlining, basejumping, mountaineering, and much more. To me they are just some crazy DOGS with a load of balls.

Make sure you clear a 40 minute window on 11.11.11 to download and watch the full documentary which will be available here.

I ART SA // SOWETO

The I Art SA Project was pioneered by the visionary work of /A Word of Art, backed by possibly one of the most notorious brands ever.

This project is one that plays close to my heart, with me personally having huge ties to South Africa and its surroundings. The I Art movement is so widely diverse that it encourages active work through a range of mediums in townships across SA. This ranges through the collaboration of artists, music, film and ultimately teaching.

Below is a section of some of the work displayed in the Soweto project, through the work of artists it was used as a way to promote and brighten up the deprived areas and inspire its residents.

The artwork shown was then made into prints and sold at various functions and events, all of the money raised would be put back into the local nursery's and schools in the form of art supplies. This thought process is echoed throughout all of the I Art endeavours, with funds being used to help local communities.

For more inspirational movements and projects visit: http://www.i-art-sa-project.com/

It provides greatest satisfaction knowing that through the use of ones talents, we can have such a profound effect on poor communities across the world.

MUSIC // NTS LIVE

Been a follower and listener of the NTS movement and radio show for a while now. There music is the saving grace as to how I get through work everyday.

Follow the musical realm live HERE.

(I would post the embedded soundcloud, but they have it set to private so unfortunately it doesnt show up.)

They have reached notoriety for a number of their shows, most notably the BPM Breakfast, which is exactly what it says and what you want for your breakfast. Thristian bPM takes me on a worldwide 3 hour tour exploring sounds from the depth of Harlem to Hiroshima via the localised beats of Hackney.

Check out Thristian's show HERE.

There are a number of other highlights that NTS have to offer, including Dark Sky who are making big names for themselves in the music business. This latest show is a collaboration of deep soulful dub vibes, chuck in some house, reggae and garage and you have a perfect receipe of music.

Check out there latest and profile HERE.

I hope you can appreciate such musical generosity being shared by NTS... Once you try them, there aint no going back...

EXHIBITION // DOGS OF LONDON

Yes our blog is called the dogblog and yes our clothing line is called yellowdog but that doesn't mean we have to blog completely about dogs....however, recently I've been on a total binge of dogging. Check this out...

The 'Dogs of London' exhibition at Westbourne Grove Church which ends today has a seriously accurate and pretty funny Dogs of London Map. The exhibition highlights artist Anna Walsh's doggy drawing project in which she has examined the different breeds and their ranging characters and distinctive looks. Anna has mapped these dogs according to the areas that most suit them which is pretty tongue in cheek but I reckon pretty accurate.

Click the map for a larger version or get down to Westbourne Grove church before the end of Saturday to have a look at the large print on display.

TUNE OF THE DAY // FLOWERS & SEA CREATURES

You may or may not be aware that we at yellowdog rave about Buzzin' Fly quite alot whilst Ben Watt tunes can be heard constantly pumping out of the print shed. Anyway, this blog is actually about the debut album from Flowers & Sea Creatures who are signed to the formidable Buzzin' Fly label. They first released a test EP last year which immediately got heads turning, they then released another EP in February this year and now the album! The songs are coming thick and fast and all contain a supreme mix of atmospheric and cinematic sound from both an alternative rock and electronic background, a pretty tasty combo.

You can check out the new album below and also visit their webpage for the back catalogue...

VIDEO // THE CREATOR'S PROJECT

Artist, professor and open-source software developer, Casey Reas explains how he works with computers (even though they are calculating and precise) to allow unexpected things to happen. He talks about his latest collaborations, moving away from the screen into public spaces, basically a pretty interesting short that takes you away from the normal menagerie of posts we make. Enjoy...

CHARITY // OWN YOUR OWN COLOUR

Pantone 810

Yellowdog is all about giving back to charity and recently donated 10% of all profits from a huge commercial printing job to the Kwasa Centre in South Africa, and when we saw the chance to actually own our very own colour from the 16.7million that Dulux has identified....we jumped at it. Pantone 810 fills the dot in our logo with colour and it was so easy to purchase! All you have to do is go to the Own A Colour Website, choose your favourite colour and then pay via text message or card to UNICEF.......now go get your own!

TUNE OF THE DAY // Gregory Porter - 1960 What

Pretty damn blissful this song. A perfect fitting song to watch the sun go down in oh so sunny England.

SURF CITY SURF DOG

Right, I haven't done a blog for ages....sorry. I've been printing, going on holiday and attempting to camp at Bestival.

Whilst trying not to be too overly dog orientated I just couldn't let this one go without dedicating a blog to it. Over in America we know that they take their pets pretty seriously, spending over $41 billion a year on them! On the west coast of America last weekend those crazy yanks held a dog surfing competition in Surf City, Huntington Beach. Check out some of the photos I spotted on The Guardian website yesterday....

TUNE OF THE DAY // Jesse Boykins III - I can't stay

I had been keeping this gem under wraps for a while now, feasting upon the beauty of the lyrics and that amazing back beat. You cant help but try and dance to it. I felt it was time to let you in on a little secret of a song.

This has been produced by Gold Panda, if you know the works of him then check out the blog that was done way back when in November 2010, HERE.

Jesse kindly put his 6 track EP for free.

You can download it from this lovely link......HERE

Beauty if defined in these 6 tracks.

TUNE OF THE DAY // Al Stewart - Year of the cat

Sorry for the distinct lack of blogging and anything really. The team have been at bestival over the weekend and survived what I call a category 12 tornado. But in reality, it was just some winds.

I just thought I would share this song with you, the piano at the start is unmissable! Just send you into another dimension, and then the spinetingling vocals encapsulate the mind and the body.

Enjoy.

MIX OF THE MONTH // Nextmen vs Bestival 2011

Whilst we have been rushing around to get 160 charity shirts printed we had many an hour to mull over and what tunes should grace our ears. We settled on the appropriateness of the Bestimix seeing as the three members of the dog family are all going to be in attendance. One as a monkey and the other as 2 red hot chilli peppers: Photos in due course.

We sampled a whole range during our 12 hour printing marathon and felt this gave us the best productivity!

Look out for the dog team at the Nextmen's show.

TUNE OF THE DAY // Joe Goddard (feat. Valentina) - Gabriel

This is a song I just cant get out of my head, and it seems to pop up everywhere I go. Be it on the radio, mixcloud or just being hummed in the background.

Joe Goddard is a man who has had a long and established career, being the hot in hotchip, 1 of the bears (there are 2.) But also now is establishing himself to be a prolific producer and a man of many talents reaping the benefits from having 3 acts associated to his name.

I look forward to hearing more from Mr Goddard, but for now I will leave you with a quote from the song.

“Gaaaaaaaaaaaabriel!”

That is all.

THE EVOLUTION OF LOGO

Right that's it, I can't hold it back any more....I love logos!, but more specifically, the evolution of logos. Yellowdog's fledgling career has seen it's logo be developed quite extensively, including total font and positioning changes but also subtle tweaks of colour. Having researched logo's extensively to see what does and doesn't work, we are definitely happy with our final choice.

Yellowdog logo - 2011

Below I've added the development that some of the major global companies' logos have gone through over the years. If you want to find out more, take a look at this information packed site and you can see a whole host of huge companies that have changed logos and their reasons behind it.

VIDEO // YELLE, QUE VEUX-TU MADEON REMIX

*Sorry, sorry ahem excuse me, for the first time ever I have had to come back and edit a post. Before I was so amazed by the video I nonchalantly decided I wasn't 100% on the tune... but having had it on repeat for about a month now, I need to tell everyone this tune is wicked and definitely gets better with every listen!

Here is the original post for you to tut at...

Not 100% on the tune but the video is amazing! No idea where it was filmed but one thing is for sure, if I saw this being filmed I wouldn't pretend it wasn't happening and ignore it. It's the type of dancing you think you're capable of doing after 11 pints but in reality your a sloppy, dribbler of a specimen wriggling about with your mouth wide.

Re-enjoy...

TUNE OF THE DAY // Toyface - Death of an Old Boy (Khan Remix)

Mr. Kähn has been making some big moves in the music industry, and some of the tunes he has been creating are simply epic. Whilst finalising our yellowdog logo and the blog logo (check above!) this came up on Laid Back Radio, and I had to track it down. This is awesome.

Get this on repeat...NOW!

DAILY DOG // BOO: THE WORLD'S CUTEST DOG

Hello everyone, meet Boo. Basically, he is a completely round piece of fluffy fur and therefore pretty cool. Now I wouldn't say he's a proper man's dog but he does look pretty macho in his TopGun outfit. Boo has now got a ridiculous amount of people following him on Facebook so his astute owner J.H Lee has sorted him out with a book deal! Now you can have your own little bit of Boo without having to clear up his doodoos, published by Chronicle Books you can pick up a copy on Amazon for £8.99.......BARK!

Now if your feeling really lucky you can pick up one of our Super 8 t-shirts over at our store. We hear that boo is popular in China and 8 is seriously lucky so get involved :)
